Abstract
1345802 Drawing; sizing bores CHABAS & BESSON SA 8 Nov 1971 [6 Nov 1970] 51790/71 Headings B3P B3H and B3Q The inner or outer surface of a tube 22 is calibrated by a tool having a hard working surface which has a curvature in axial section, the length of the curve in contact with the tube surface being small compared with the transverse dimension of the tube surface and the radius of curvature of the curve being small compared with the radius of curvature of the tube surface. The latter is displaced by a distance which is small compared with the thickness of the tube wall, the other tube surface being unconstrained in the region of the tool. The angle between the straight line joining the points where the tube surface comes into and leaves contact with the tool and the direction of motion of the tool may be less than 12 of 12-20 degrees. In one embodiment, Fig. 8, a steel tube 22 to be calibrated, together with a ring 23 and half shells 24, are mounted on a shaft 11 which is secured to a piston-rod 4 of an hydraulic cylinder 3. The cylinder 3 is actuated to push the tube 22 through a die 15 which has an outer conical surface and an inner working surface defined by a rounded shoulder having a radius of 25-35 mm. When the outer surface of the tube 22 has been drawn by the die 15, the half shells 24 are removed, the ring 23 is pushed back and a mandrel 25, Fig. 11, having a rounded working surface with a radius preferably between 3-6 mm., is screwed into the end of the shaft 11. The rounded surface of the mandrel 25 may be other than circular such as elliptical or oval. Members 18 are pivoted about pivots (19) (Fig. 3, not shown) into a closed position 30 that when the mandrel 25 is pulled by the piston rod 4 through the bore of the tube 22 to calibrate its inner surface, the one end of the tube 22 engages the members 18. The process may be repeated using a different mandrel 25. In another embodiment, Fig. 15, the tube is calibrated by drawing it between a drawing die and a cylindrical mandrel 31 having a calibrating tool 33 connected to it.
