Abstract
1345748 Polymer film E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 14 Sept 1971 [9 Oct 1970] 42793/71 Heading B5B [Also in Division H1] A polymer film suitable for use in electrical insulation systems comprises a film having at least one surface which has been activated by chemical etching or electrostatic discharge treatment and at least one surface which has a pattern in the form of a plurality of ribs or grooves each of which extends generally transverse of the film from at least one edge thereof. The surface patterning of the film may be formed during the film casting or moulding process or may be formed by embossing a preformed flat film. The surface activation treatment may be with a corona discharge or by etching the surface of the film with, for example, an alkali metal in liquid ammonia or sodium naphthalene in dimethylglycol ether. Suitable polymers are polyolefins, polycarbonates and fluorocarbon polymers. When used in tape form as a wrapping for primary electrical insulation of an electrical cable the polymer preferably has a dielectric constant of less than 4À0 and a dissipation factor of no greater than 0À002. The surface pattern permits the penetration of oil between layers of the tape to displace all air bubbles and the surface activation increases the affinity of the dielectric oil and polymer film for one another to give improved performance of the insulator. Examples relate to the treatment of ribbed tetrafluoroethylene / hexafluoropropylene copolymer, polyethylene, polycarbonate and polyethylene terephthalate tapes to a corona discharge and to the chemical etching of a ribbed PTFE film with a 2% THF solution of sodium 1-methylnaphthalene at room temperature.
