Abstract

1345455 Seaming non-metallic sheet material FR HESSER MASCHINENFABRIK AG 20 March 1972 [19 March 1971] 12871/72 Heading B5K A device for transversely welding tubular thermoplastic or thermoplastic coated packaging material 22 to seal objects 25 therein, comprises two welding jaws 1, 2 biased relatively towards one another and a pressure limiter 12 between the jaw 2 and its support 10 for automatically limiting the maximum pressure applicable by the jaws independently of the separation of the jaws. As shown, the jaw 1 is attached to two parallel rods 3 movable parallel to themselves in a somewhat elliptical orbit 4. The jaw 2 is attached to a carrier 5 having at its ends sleeves 6 slidable on rods 9 attached to rods 10 parallel to the rods 3 and similarly movable in an orbit 11. Two toggle mechanisms 12 each comprise levers 13 pivoted to the carrier 5 and levers 14 pivoted thereto by bolts 15 and to a yoke 16. The distance between the yokes 16 and the rods 10 is adjustable by nuts 17 on the rods 9. Tension springs 19 act between lugs 18 on the levers 14 to urge the bolts 15 towards each other so that the jaw 2 is urged towards the jaw 1. Stop washers 20 between the carrier 5 and the rods 10 limit this movement. Stop pins 21 on the yokes 16 prevent self-locking of the toggles 12 in their dead-centre positions. A cutter 24 is provided to cut the material 22 in the centre of the welding zone 23 simultaneously with welding. If, in use, an object 25 is located in the orbit of the jaws 1, 2, the jaws will clamp the object 25 therebetween and the levers 13, 14 will pivot out against the force of the springs 19. As the bolts 15 move outwardly the clamping force exerted on the object 25 decreases. In alternative embodiments (not shown), the springs 19 are replaced by pneumatic cylinders or magnets which may be controlled by a sensor or feeler to detect the presence of an object. If the material 22 is transparent and the objects 25 opaque a photo-electric cell may be provided as detector.
