Abstract
1343456 Removing SO 3 from gases; Al 2 O 3 plates; alumina ceramics SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ NV 22 April 1971 [24 April 1970] 10746/71 Headings C1A and C1J SO 3 is removed from gases by contacting the gases with a solid inorganic oxide which reacts chemically with SO 3 , and the oxide is then regenerated with H 2 S. The oxide may be #, α, or γ-Al 2 O 3 , or MgO, and may contain up to 10% alkali metal or alkaline earth metal oxide. The absorption may be carried out at 250-625‹ C. and the regeneration at within 50‹ C. of this temperature, e.g. 200-550‹ C. SO 2 -containing gases, e.g. kue gases and Claus off-gases, are first oxidized to SOt using a catalyst, e.g. of K 2 O and V 2 O 5 on SiO 2 . The oxidation may be effected in an apparatus comprising parallel gas channels with gauze walls, separated by catalyst zones. The absorption apparatus may comprise a plurality of parallel plates of the oxide with gas channels between them. After absorption the gases may be contacted with Cu and/or Cu oxide on an Al 2 O 3 support to remove residual SO 3 . The gases from the regeneration (SO 2 H 2 S and S vapour) may be fed to a Claus plant. γ-Al 2 O 3 plates may be made by calcining Al 2 O 3 or hydrated Al 2 O 3 at above 780‹ C., e.g. 800-1100‹ C., mixing with a binding agent, with or without water, powdered glass, and a pore-forming agent, compressing, optionally drying at 200‹ C. or below, and heating at above 780‹ C. The binding agent may be kaolioite, attapulgite, bentonite, halloysite, or montmorillonite and may be used in amounts of 0À1-0À5 pts. per pt. Al 2 O 3 . The glass may be soda-lime, lead or borosilicate glass, and may be present in amounts of up 10% in the plates. The poreforming agent may be polypropylene, polypivalolactone, flour, wood chips, paraffin wax, sugar, persalts, or peroxides.
