Abstract
1343228 Data processing; microinstructions INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 25 Feb 1972 8755/72 Headings G4-G6 A data processing system is adapted to select a desired set of microinstructions from a master set. This is to control a data processing system, e.g. an IBM System 370/135 capable of comprising different combinations of processing units and peripheral devices. The selected instructions (a microcode) are chosen using an IBM System 360/65 (Fig. 1, not shown) and the results stored on a magnetic disc for loading into the System 370/135. The master set is stored on a microprogram master tape (MMT) comprising blocks of microinstructions, each block being called a Routine Control Section (RCS). The indexes to these Sections are stored in blocks called Load Control Sections (LCS). Also stored on the MMT is a table relating Bill of Material Numbers (BMN's) to LCS's and to Feature Mnemonics (FM's). The BMN's give the possible features for a desired system and the FM's are particular to each feature and are used in the selection of blocks of microcode within each RCT. The desired system is specified by BM's read in from cards. The selection process is shown in detail on Fig. 2. The microinstructions are first selected then arranged into a suitable order. Also mentioned are integrated circuit stores, multiplexing, optical and laser stores, a printer, magnetic tape stores, hexadecimal coding, and branch and error correction instructions.
