Abstract

1342848 Continuous casting CONCAST AG 18 Feb 1972 [22 Feb 1971] 7746/72 Addition to 1173755 Heading B3F [Also in Division G1] The light intensity at a secondary cooling zone 8 of a continuous casting plant is monitored, e.g. by photo-electric cells 14 on a chamber 15 enclosing the zone, so that any changes due to molten metal breakout are compared with predetermined values and when a value is exceeded, electric signals are obtained for controlling the plant. Upon a first value being exceeded, automatically flow of melt into the mould 6 is shut off and withdrawal by rolls 12 briefly interrupted and then resumed at reduced speed. If the light intensity then falls, a reduced melt flow is started and finally normal casting is restored in stages if the breakout is cured by the cooling. If a second light intensity value is exceeded, the withdrawal is further reduced and the secondary cooling water flow increased. If a third value is exceeded, i.e. the preceding measures have not stopped the breakout, the withdrawal is completely stopped, an alarm is set off and the casting operation is switched to manual control. If the secondary cooling zone uses cooling plates or grids, the breakout may be covered by a surface and thus assisted in resolidication.
