Abstract

1342794 Treating anaerobic sludges PERMUTIT CO Ltd 3 May 1972 [3 May 1971] 12697/71 Heading C1C A sludge produced by anaerobic digestion (e.g. primary sludge) is treated in the aerobic digestion zone of a long period aeration activated sludge plant. A suitable plant comprises contact zone 3, settling zone 2, stabilization zone 4 and digestion zone 5, the volume of digestion zone 5 being at least 1“ times the volume of the stabilization zone 4. The volume of the digestion zone may be 1“-2 times the volume of the stabilization zone. In use sewage in admixture with activated sludge from zone 4, is aerated in zone 3. Sludge is settled in zone 2 and passed by an airlift to aerobic stabilization zone 4. Sludge from zone 4 and an anaerobic sludge from a source (not shown) are digested in aerobic digestion zone 5.
