1342508 2 - Hydroxynaphthalene - 3 - carboxylic acid AMERICAN CYANAMID CO 18 May 1971 [29 June 1970] 15681/71 Heading C2C In a process for preparing 2-hydroxynaphthalene - 3 - carboxylic acid involving the steps of (1) reacting beta-naphthol with sodium hydroxide to form sodium beta naphtholate (2) dehydrating the reaction mixture and (3) reacting the dehydrated mixture with carbon dioxide under pressure at elevated temperature to form the di-sodium salt of the 2-hydroxynaphthalene - 3 - carboxylic acid, each of the steps is carried out in the presence as solvent of an alkyl naphthalene having one or more alkyl groups of from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, or a mixture thereof, said solvent being present in step (1) in an amount sufficient to dissolve all of the sodium beta naphtholate which is formed. The solvent may include beta-naphthol present in an amount 5% to 25% in excess of the stoichiometric amount required for reaction with sodium hydroxide to form the sodium beta naphtholate.
