Abstract
1342239 Soldering SKF (UK) Ltd 19 April 1971 [4 March 1970] 10445/70 Heading B3R [Also in Division F2] A rolling bearing assembly is made by joining a hardened and finished first metal part having a load-acceptance surface to a second metal part using bismuth solder and a non-corrosive flux and without heating any hardened metal part so much as to affect the metallurgical properties of its load-acceptance surface. As shown in Fig. 1 a taper roller bearing comprising an outer race 15 and thrust ring 16, both of which are hardened and finished metal parts of the bearing, has these parts soldered together using a bismuth solder with a non- corrosive flux, neither of the parts being heated so much as to affect the metallurgical properties of its load-accepting surface. Soldering may be performed at a temperature below the final tempering temperature of the parts which is approximately 160 C. A coating of solder may be applied to either part. The solder can be applied by a rotary drum or brush which dips in a molten solder bath, as a wire which is subsequently melted, or by electro-plating. The thickness of the solder coating is preferably within the manufacturing tolerances of the parts. As shown in Fig. 10 a thrust bearing, intended to be used in a clutch-operating mechanism of a motor-car, includes an outer race 52 and a casing 54 which are bismuth-soldered together at the mouth 56. The race 52 is a hardened and finished metal part of the bearing. One or more pieces 57 of solder wire are used; the latter may be fluxcored. Other embodiments of rolling bearing assemblies are described (Figs. 2-9, not shown). Heating of the solder can be by conduction, through one of the parts, of heat from an electrically-heated sole plate pressed thereagainst; or by eddy currents induced in the solder by an high frequency coil; or by radiant heat from an infra-red heater. If necessary a groove or recess can be provided adjacent the joint surface of one of the parts to absorb excess solder which might be squeezed out of the joint. The bismuth solder, which may have a melting point as low as 70 C., is a tinlead alloy containing bismuth and possibly cadmium and other alloying elements.
