Abstract

1341917 Drying wound spools of filaments SIEMENS AG 19 April 1971 [21 Aug 1970] 20952/71 Heading F4G The glass or textile filament 3 is dried as it is wound into a spool 2 on a winding core 1 by exposing the surface layer of the spool 2 to a high-frequency electric field having field strength components directed longitudinally of the filament 3. A curved plate electrode 5 (Fig. 1) is connected to the live pole of a high-frequency source 9 operating at 15 MHz (or at microwave frequencies), and two rod electrodes 7 and the winding core 1 of the spool 2 are connected to the earthed other pole of the source 9. The field between the plate electrode 5 and the core 1 is about 0À2-1À0 kV/cm. The filament 3 is of about 500-2000 denier, consists of a multiplicity of fibres, and is impregnated with dressing size having a surface resistance greater than 10 kilohm/cm. An air nozzle 4 removes the surface water from the filament 3. When the spool is complete, it may be briefly dried at doubled field strength. The distance of the electrodes from the spool 2 and each other and/or the energy supplied to the electrodes may be varied automatically in accordance with a preset programme. The plastics sleeve 8 acts as a diffusion barrier to obtain a residual moisture content of 2% rather than less than 0À5% without it. In Fig. 2, where the dressing size has a surface resistance less than 10 kilohm/cm., the rod electrodes 10 and 11 are connected alternately to the different poles of the source 9. A field strength of 0À5-5À0 kV/cm. is utilized.
