Abstract

134,140. Otterson, G. W. Feb. 7, 1919. Pneumatic collectors.-Consists in a travelling apparatus for emptying sewer basins, comprising a motor-vehicle. fitted with a pump for operating an hydraulic ejector which is carried by extensible pipes and is lowered into the catch-pit, the sewerage being ejected into a tank on the vehicle. The tank is fitted with swinging baffle-plates forming settling-chambers, and with a clear-water channel forming a supply for the pump. The tank is pivoted to the frame of the vehicle and is emptied by raising one end, the baffle-plates swinging to release the solid matter. An automatic make-and-break joint is provided in the water-supply pipe to the pump, and an auxiliary jet is provided for agitating the contents of the pit. The pump 26 is driven from the engine and is supplied with water through a pipe 35 from a clear-water channel in the tank, which is formed by a longitudinal partition near one side. The connexion between the pipe 35 and the tank is shown in Fig. 4. The tank is fitted with a socket 33 in which a spring-pressed spigot 31 carried by the pipe engages. The pump supplies water to an ejector 38 by a flexible pipe 27. The ejector comprises a nozzle 40, Fig. 8, and a constricted throat 41, the sewage entering by an orifice 38 fitted with a depending pipe 42. The sewage is forced up a telescopic pipe 36 into the tank, where the solid matter settles, the clear water being fed again to the pipe. Excess of clear water flows through an overflow 56 to the catch-pit by an adjustable spout 65. The baffles in the tank are pivoted to transverse top rods 12 and have staggered openings. The end baffle is provided with a number of small sieve perforations. The tail-gate 8 is similarly pivoted and is released by undoing the clamps 14 and by operating a rock-shaft 15 fitted with holding-dogs 21 from the front of the vehicle by means of a hand-lever. The tank is tilted for emptying by a winch 4. The ejector is adjustably carried by a guide 48 carried on a slidable horizontal arm. The ejector is raised and lowered by a winch 45. Additional settling- tanks may be provided on trailing vehicles. An agitator comprises a small hose fitted with a nozzle 59.
