Abstract

1340797 Tumbling DR ING MANFRID DREHER KG 4 Aug 1972 36626/72 Heading B3D [Also in Division B2] A centrifugal drum unit 10 for surface treating small parts comprises a plurality of drums 14, 16 rotatable together about an axis substantially parallel to their longitudinal axes and about their respective longitudinal axes, means for so rotating the drums, means 46 within the drums for progressing parts within them towards outlets therefrom, and a feed structure 36 communicating with inlets 20 to the drums as they rotate whereby the parts and treatment materials can be continuously fed into the drums as they rotate, the parts being treated in the drums and progressing towards, and out of, outlets 22. The outlets communicate with a receiving and separating unit 12. As described, the unit 10 has three drums 14, 16 of hexagonal cross-section, the ends of which are connected by tapered portions to cylindrical necks 20, 22 forming inlets and outlets, respectively. The necks are rotatably mounted in bearings in carrier wheels 24, 26 which are located by upper and lower pairs of rollers 28, 30, one of which is driven by a belt drive 32 from a motor 34. The feed structure 36 consists of a distributer which is rotatable with the wheel 24 and has a feed pipe 38 extending into each inlet 20. Parts and media are supplied to the distributer by a conveyer 44 and hopper 42. The drums 14, 16 are rotated in the opposite direction to that of the wheels 24, 26 by belts 92, 94 from a hollow shaft 90 which extends through the receiving and separating unit 12 and is driven by a motor 88. The parts and media progress through the drums as they rotate by the action of blades 46 which are adjustable to vary the progress through the drums by flanges 48 adjustable by a head 50 at the end of a rod 52 extending through the shaft 90. The receiving and separating unit 12 consists of a drum 54 supported in pairs of rollers 60 by bearing rims 56, 58, one roller of each pair being driven by a belt 64 from a motor 62. The parts and media discharged from the outlets 22 of the drums are received in a filling zone A of the drum 54 and pass by way of a coil-like arrangement of blades 63 to a first treatment zone B wherein the treating media passes through perforations 54 into a collecting tank 67 having an outlet 68 through which the media passes onto a conveyer 70 to a storage container. A spray pipe 80 may extend into the zone B for cleaning the parts. From the zone B, the parts are moved by the blades to a second treatment zone C into which a substance which combines with moisture, such as wood meal or powder, is blown by a pipe 74 connected to a heater 78 and blower 76, the pipe also communicating with the outlet 72 of a collecting tank 65 for the wood meal or powder which passes through the perforations in the zone C. The dried parts are then passed by the blades 63 to a shoot 82 and conveyer 84.
