Abstract
1340731 Measuring gasoline octane number electrically UNIVERSAL OIL PRODUCTS CO 14 May 1971 [15 May 1970] 14935/71 Heading G1N The octane rating of a gasoline fraction sample is determined in a combustion chamber 2 heated by fluid in a canister 1 enclosing the chamber, the sample passing into the chamber through a line 19 and being oxidized by air, flowing from line 8, in a cool flame which has a narrow welldefined flame front spaced from one end of the combustion chamber the position of which flame front is sensed by axially spaced thermocouples 4, 5 and stabilized relative to the chamber by controllers 12, 14 acting on the fluid pressure in the chamber, which pressure is sensed by a transducer 17 and signalled to a computer 25 where the resultant signal representing octane number of the sample is compensated for temperature variations in the fluid surrounding the chamber by a signal from a temperature sensor 28 or from a sensor (not shown) within the combustion chamber. Additionally the computer is periodically calibrated by passage of a reference fuel, in place of a test sample, into the combustion chamber under the control of timer 23 and valve 21. The compensated signal is displayed at 27. In an alternative embodiment Fig. 2 (not shown) the computer 25 is replaced by equivalent signal conditioning networks. Alternatively the position of the flame front may be fixed by control of the temperature in the induction section of the chamber or of sample stream flow-rate or of the flowrate of an oxygen-containing gas streamline 8.
