Abstract

1339981 Acrylic ester copolymers SUMITOMO CHEMICAL CO Ltd 19 April 1971 [4 March 1970 (2)] 23527/71 Heading C3P Curable halogen-containing copolymers comprising units of at least one olefin, at least one hydrocarbyl acrylic ester and at least one halogen-substituted olefin, styrene, hydrocarbon-substituted styrene, bridged cyclic unsaturated hydrocarbon, diolefin, unsaturated alcohol ester, acrylonitrile, acrylic acid, acrylic ester, acryloyl halide or acrylamide, are prepared by copolymerizing the monomers in the presence of a metal halide. The polymers may be derived from isobutylene, propylene, ethylene, butene-1, 2-methylbutene-1, hexene-1, butene-2, 4-methylpentene-1 and octadecene-1; methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl, amyl, hexyl, 2- ethylhexyl, octadecyl, allyl, crotyl, cinnamyl, o-tolyl, benzyl, norbornenylmethyl and cyclohexyl acrylates; and halogen-substituted acrylonitriles, acrylamides, unsaturated esters and acid halides. The metal halide may be an aluminium halide, alkyl aluminium halide, boron trihalide, alkyl boron halide, zinc halide, tin tetrahalide or alkyl tin halide, and polymerization may be initiated by radical polymerization catalysts, oxygen, organometallic compounds or actinic radiation. The copolymers may be cured by heating with basic compounds, e.g. aliphatic polyamines and heterocyclic compounds containing at least two nitrogen atoms. Examples describe the copolymerization of isobutylene, ethyl acrylate and (1) 2- chlorethyl acrylate, (2) vinyl chloracetate and (3) methallyl chloride in the presence of ethyl boron dichloride; (4) propylene, amyl acrylate and 3-chloropropyl acrylate in the presence of ethyl aluminium sesquichloride ; (5) isobutylene, n-butyl acrylate and 2-chlorethyl acrylate or vinyl chloracetate in the presence of zinc chloride and triethyl boron; and (6) isobutylene, chlorallyl acrylate and 2-ethylhexyl acrylate in the presence of zinc chloride and azodiisobutyronitrue; the products being cured with (1) hexamethylene diamine carbamate or (2 and 4) triethylene tetramine and sulphur.
