Abstract

1339911 Rubber compositions containing a sulphite ester; bonding rubber to polyester material IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 19 April 1991 [26 Feb 1970] 9393/70 Headings C3E and C3Q [Also in Division D1] Rubber containing a sulphite ester of formula wherein R and R<SP>1</SP> are the same or different and each is an optionally substituted alkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkyl, cycloalkenyl, aralkyl, aryl or heterocyclic group or R and R<SP>1</SP> are joined so that atoms from these two groups together with the two oxygen atoms and the sulphur atom form a ring is contacted with polyester material, e.g. by embedding said material in the rubber, or using the rubber to bond rubber not containing such an ester to polyester material. Examples are given in which polyethylene terephthalate cord is embedded in a natural rubber composition containing diphenyl sulphite, bis-(alpha-carbethoxybenzyl) sulphite, dibenzyl sulphite, bis- (beta - butoxyethyl) sulphite, di - (o - tolyl) sulphite, bis-(alpha-carbethoxyethyl) sulphite, dioctyl sulphite, dilauryl sulphite, 1,2-bis- (carbethoxy)ethylene sulphite, pentaerythrityl disulphite, bis - (alphacarbomethoxyethyl) sulphite, di - (p - chlorophenyl) sulphite, di- (beta - naphthyl) sulphite, diallyl sulphite, di - (tetrahydrofurfuryl sulphite or di-(2- phenoxyethyl) sulphite and the assembly is heated in a mould.
