Abstract

1339810 Polyhydantoins DR BECK & CO AG 3 Nov 1971 [6 Nov 1970] 51012/71 Heading C3R [Also in Division B2] A polymer (P) containing hydantoin groups is made by reacting a polymer (Q) containing recurring units -R 1 -NH-CR 2 R 3 -CONH- with a diaryl carbonate; R 1 is aliphatic, cycloaliphatie, aromatic or araliphatic, and R 2 and R 3 are each H or C 1-4 alkyl; (Q) is in a solution containing not more than 30% (Q), the solvent being one or more phenolic solvents, e.g. cresol, xylenol or carbonic acid esters thereof; and the reaction is performed at 100-250‹ C. Polymer (Q) may be obtained conventionally by reacting diamines with chloracetic acid derivatives, e.g. the acid chloride or an ester. 1 mole of diaryl carbonate used is preferably used per g. equiv. NH in (Q). The phenol liberated in the reaction serves as solvent for the polymer (P) formed. In examples, (Q) is derived from chloracetic acid chloride and 4,4<SP>1</SP>- diaminodiphenylmethane or 4<SP>1</SP>,4<SP>1</SP>-diaminodiphenyl ether; (Q) is then reacted with diphenyl carbonate to produce (P). Uses.-Solutions of (P) are used for coating Cu wires, or for producing films.
