Abstract

1339664 Pad disc brakes P RICKWOOD and G C RICKWOOD 19 May 1971 15899/71 Heading F2E A pad type disc brake has its disc 7 secured at its periphery to a support 1 for mounting on a wheel, a pair of caliper levers 13, 14 non-rotatably carried one on each axial side of the disc, respective first and second ends of each lever being located in diametrically opposite sides of the disc axis, each lever being fulerummed intermediate its ends on a carrier, the fulcrum being spaced from the disc axis by a distance less than the mean radius of the disc faces, the pads being mounted on the first ends, and the second ends being fitted with actuating means to urge them apart. A bracket 11 mounted on a wheel axle cover has two fulcrum pins 12 each mounting a lever 13, 14, the levers being actuated by a crank 18 pivoted on an extension of lever 13 and coacting with a pin 21 adjustably fixed in lever 14, so that clockwise crank movement separates the second ends of the levers. Springs 16 retract the levers 13, 14. An automatic wear adjuster comprises a crank 23, arm 24, pawl 25 and ratchet 25a whereby excessive lever movement rotates the pin 21 in one direction either during braking or releasing. A hexagonal head on the pin 21 allows manual wear adjustment. The disc 7 has radial holes 9 for cooling air and is fixed to a drum forming the support 1 having axial slots la for cooling. A fan 22, composed of two halves, is fixed to the disc 7, and has axially and radially inwardly directed vanes.
