Abstract

1338846 Portable pipe grooving tools AMP Inc 19 Jan 1972 [18 Feb 1971] 2508/72 Heading B3T A portable hand operated tool for machining circumferential grooves in the end of a pipe comprises a pipe supporting body member 2 having a tubular portion 5 from which extends a semi-cylindrical portion 10, a bracket 16 being secured to one edge of the semi-cylindrical portion and which pivotally supports a cutter carrying assembly 9 which is biased by a spring 40 to radially urge the cutters towards the body axis. The bracket 16 and assembly 9 are actuated by a cam spindle and lever 64 to 68 to effect pivoting of the assembly and to retract the cutting tools radially out of engagement with a pipe located in the body member 2. The cutters which are in the form of a plurality of discs 48 are axially spaced along a support 52 parallel to the axis of the member 2. An end stop 50<SP>1</SP> is also provided on the support 52 to determine the extent the pipe extends into the body member and hence the position of the resulting grooves on the pipe. The tubular portion 5 of the body member is provided with a plurality of axially extending circumferentially spaced lands 4 for the locating of a wrench or device for rotating the tool to perform a groove cutting operation. The cutters are fed into the pipe surface under the pressure of the spring 40 and the depth of cut is determined by an adjustable screw stop 34 with the spring 40 and engaging the bracket 16. A cradle 79 for supporting the pipe is locatable in the portion 10 and is interchangeable to facilitate the machining of pipes of different sizes.
