Abstract

1338249 Detergents containing enzymes COLGATE-PALMOLIVE CO 3 Dec 1970 [10 Dec 1969] 57521/70 Heading C5D A free-flowing mass, substantially free from enzyme dust, of substantially spherical beads of water-dispersible solid fusible binder having an enzyme concentrate dispersed therein, is prepared by blending a powdered enzyme concentrate with the binder in molten form and spraying droplets of the molten blend into cool air to solidify the droplets and form substantially spherical beads. The melting temperature of the binder must be such that the enzyme is not harmed during the formation of the beads and it is preferred that the binder has a melting point of 45‹ to 60‹ C. The preferred binder is a non-ionic surfactant, particularly ethylene oxide adducts of (a) C 12 -C 20 alkanols, (b) C 8 -C 18 alkylphenols and thiophenols, (c) amides, (d) fatty acids and fatty acid partial esters, (e) monoesters of hexahydric alcohols and inner ethers thereof, (f) polypropylene glycol. Other binders are ethylene oxide polymers; C 8 -C 26 fatty acids and fatty alcohols and 1 : 2 to 2 : 1 blends thereof; alkanolamides and fatty acid mono- or di-glycerides. The enzyme may be a proteolytic enzyme, a metallo-protease (contains Ca, Mg or zinc ions), an emylase or a mixture thereof. The enzyme may be introduced in admixture with a diluent or in the form of a culture concentrate. The beads are incorporated into detergent compositions such as (a) laundry detergent, (b) laundry pre-soak, and (c) dishwashing, formulations of a conventional type.
