Abstract
1338091 Polyesters; polymers containing metals IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 11 Jan 1971 [23 Jan 1970] 3434/70 Heading C3R [Also in Division C2] Polyesters are produced by polycondensing a bis-(dihydric alcohol) ester of an aromatic dicarboxylic acid in the presence, as sole essential catalyst, of at least one simple or polymeric compound containing at least one metal atom attached to at least one anionic ligand, the remaining co-ordination and valency requirements of the metal atom being satisfied by one or more other ligands, the said anionic ligand being an anion of an acid. having the structure in which X 1 is -R or -OR, and X 2 is R or a group of the structure where R is a hydrocarbyl or substituted hydrocarbyl group, R<SP>1</SP> is a divalent hydrocarbon group of diether group, or substituted derivative thereof, and Z is a group Vb element having an atomic number greater than 7, e.g. P or As. When the metal is Zn, Mn, Ca, Na, Ti, Al, La, Pb, Co, Fe or Cd, the catalyst may be used for the ester interchange as well as for the polycondensation. The catalyst is preferably a polymer having a number average molecular weight up to 4000 containing repeating units of the structure where M is a metal atom, a is 1-4 and b is a positive integer. The catalyst may be used in amounts of from 0À00001 to 1% by weight of the acid component. In the examples, polyethylene terephthalate is prepared using various monomeric, dimeric and polymeric phosphonate, phosphinate and arsinate compounds wherein the metal atom is Zn, Zn/Co mixture, Co, Mn, Ca, Na, Ti, Al, La, Pb, Zr, V, Sb, Fe, Cd and Sn.
