Abstract

1337986 Portable jacks for container traffic W E & F DOBSON Ltd 9 July 1971 [24 July 1970] 35907/70 Headings B8J and B8Q A portable container handling unit comprises an hydraulic jack 10 having its cylinder uppermost and provided at its lower end with a slide block 18 in vertical guides 16. The slide block 18 carries a connection member 12 releasably attachable to a standard I.S.O. fitting at a lower corner of a container (not shown). At the uppermost part of the cylinder a stabilizing member 14 projects laterally, in vertical alignment with the connection member 12. The handling unit has retractable wheels 34 and may be positioned by a handle 36 on casters 38 and attached to the base. The members 12, 14 are mounted on respective'double-acting rams 20, 26 interconnected to maintain vertical registration of the members 12, 14. A handling unit is used at each corner of a container, the rams 10 lifting while the rams 20, 26 may be used for adjusting the position of the container laterally through small distances to align it with a supporting platform, which may be on a lorry, as required. Fig. 3 (not shown) illustrates an hydraulic control system for the four units and includes manual override for the jacks 10 to compensate for uneven ground, and safety arrangements in case of hydraulic failure.
