Abstract
1337572 Automatic tension control M J DYKMANS 27 Nov 1970 [24 June 1970] 56525/70 Heading G3R The tension in a wire being wound around a circular structure by a carriage moving round the structure is compared with a reference, and restored to the desired value by varying the relative speed of the carriage and a gripping means for applying the wire. In Fig.2, a carriage 7 mounted on wheels 9 is driven round a stationary structure T, e.g. a concrete pressure vessel, by a hydraulic motor 30 driving a sprocket 22 engaging a chain C which surrounds the structure. A wire S, for pre-stressing the structure, is supplied from a reel R and gripped by being spring-urged to a drum 21 which driven from motor 30 through a differential gear 82, chain 16, shaft 40 and chain 41 at a linear speed less than that of the carriage so that tension is applied to the wire as it is wrapped round the structure. A signal dependent on the torque in shaft 40, and hence the tension in the wire, is derived from a strain gauge 100 and compared with a signal from a potentiometer 102 representing the desired tension so that any difference is effective to adjust the speed of a hydraulic motor 92 driving differential gear 82 until the speed of drum 21 is such that the desired wire tension is obtained. A tension indicator and/or a recorder driven synchronously with shaft 40, utlizing a pulse transmitter 360, are provided. A switch LS1 is operated by a member 242 fixed relative to the ground once during each turn round the structure so that a controller 240 is operated to cause a drum 202 to be driven by a hydraulic motor 206 until a cam-operated switch LS2 has been actuated a predetermined number of times. This winds a cable 200 to raise a frame 5 on wheels relative to carriage 7 so that the wire is laid at a gradually increasing height on the structure until the height for the next turn is reached. A pump 207 for the hydraulic system is driven by motor 30 so that the rate of increase of the wire height is dependent on the rate of laying. A dog 91A may be engaged to prevent reverse rotation of the differential gear. Controller 240 includes switches which may be set according to whether upward or downward winding or manual control is desired.
