Abstract

1337394 Insulating pipes; protecting pipe joints REDLAND PIPES Ltd 19 April 1971 [26 March 1970] 14742/70 Headings F2P and F2G A thermally insulated composite pipe comprises coaxial reinforced plastics inner and outer tubes 1, 2, separated by preformed sections of insulating material 4, the tubes being sealed by end caps 8, 11 at or adjacent the ends of the pipe. The inner tube 1 has spigot and socket ends 9, 7 and one or both ends protrude from the end caps 8, 11. The insulating material 4, in the form of sleeves, or semi-cylindrical halves extending the length of the outer tube 2, is of mineral fibre material, compacted powder or granular material, or foamed synthetic resin, e.g. polyurethane. A number of air gaps may be provided between the insulating material 4 and the inner and/or outer tubes 1, 2, wherefor the insulating material has longitudinal and/or circumferential ribs, or a non-similar cross-section with the tube(s). The tubes 1, 2 are of helically-wound glass fibres or filaments or substantially circumferentially wound glass fibres or filaments with interspersed longitudinal such fibres, impregnated with polyester or epoxy resin. The end caps 8, 11 are of plastics material and bonded to the tubes providing a water-tight seal. The spigot portion 9 of the inner tube has sets of 0-rings 10.
