Abstract

1337263 Oxygen-containing heterocyclic compounds IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 2 Dec 1971 [2 Nov 1970] 51922/70 Heading C2C A product comprising a major proportion of a dihydropyran is produced by contacting butadiene or a chlor- or methyl-derivative thereof with formaldehyde in the presence of a Lewis acid catalyst and a substantially non- aqueous solvent comprising nitrobenzene, chlorobenzene or dichlorobenzene the Lewis acid catalyst being contacted with the butadiene (or derivative) either before or simultaneously as (but not after) it is contacted by the formaldehyde. Preferably the solvent comprises as a minor additive an additional organic compound, other than an amine, which is a Lewis base containing an oxygen, nitrogen or sulphur atom, for example, a ketone, an ether or a nitrile. Examples describe the conversion of butadiene to dihydropyran.
