Abstract

1336707 Pile fabrics SIDLAW INDUSTRIES Ltd 15 Oct 1970 [30 Aug 1969] 43267/69 Heading D1K [Also in Division B5] A method of coating carpeting with plastics material comprises doctoring a layer of predetermined thickness of a thermo-plastics material onto a heat-resistant carrier sheet, laying the carpeting to be coated onto said layer, applying heat to said layer through said carrier sheet so as to bond the layer of thermo-plastics material to said carpeting, cooling the bonded layer and carpeting so as to form coated carpeting and stripping the carrier sheet from the coated carpeting. The carrier sheet is preferably woven from glass fibres coated with a heat-resistant resin and heat is applied by laying the carrier sheet into a hot plate. Cooling is preferably effected as a flat or slightly convex surface. In the example, a liquid polyvinyl chloride composition is spread on a carrier sheet comprising woven glass fibre, coated with a silicone resin using a doctor blade and carpeting comprising tufts needled on to a backing made of a polyester laid on the coating. The resultant assembly is then passed onto a hot plate to gel the resin, removed from the hot plate and allowed to cool prior to the removal of the carrier sheet.
