Abstract

1336706 Heat exchangers D A HEATHCOLEMAN 20 Nov 1970 [20 Aug 1969] 41533/69 Heading F4S A heat exchanger comprises a plurality of spaced-apart, parallel finned members each having an internal flow path formed therein for a first fluid, said members being interconnected by conduit means and being so constructed and arranged that projecting fin portions at one end of each said member together constitute a decorative or protective grille for the heat exchanger. In particular the heat exchanger comprises a radiator for a motor vehicle. The finned members are preferably extruded from a metal, e.g. aluminium, or an alloy. The conduit members may be made from metal or from a high density plastics material, e.g. nylon or polypropylene. Figs. 1, 3a, 3b show a vehicle radiator in which the finned members 22 having the crosssection shown in Fig. 3b (or alternatively in Figs. 4a-4e) extend between end-plates 42 and are interconnected by conduit means 28. The bore 26 of each element need not be circular. Fig. 5 shows an alternative construction where each finned member consists of elongate tubular portions 50, 52 interconnected by fins 54, 56, 58. The said conduit means in this case consists of through holes 62, 63 in spacer elements 60. A stack is formed of the finned elements and conduit elements 60 and is clamped with interposed gaskets, by means such as bolts 74. The ends of the tubular passages in the elements are plugged and holes 62, 63 in the conduit means are in alignment with corresponding ports 66, 68, 70, 72 in the elements, these ports being so positioned at the ends of the tubular passages as to direct the flow of the internal fluid (e.g. water) through each element in turn. The radiator grille is formed by fin portions 80 of the elements.
