Abstract

1336661 Tobacco-smoke filter BRITISHAMERICAN TOBACCO CO Ltd 27 March 1972 [16 April 1971] 9632/71 Heading A2C The filter comprises a tube I of smokefiltering sheet material, such as paper, spaced radially from an outer tubular wrapper 2, the tube 1 being blocked with plugs 5 at both ends, and the space between the tube 1 and the wrapper 2 being blocked around complementary arcs at opposite ends by seals 7a, 7b and blocked longitudinally by ribs 3 so that smoke entering the space 6 at one end is constrained to pass through the wall of the tube 1 twice before reaching the other, outlet, end. An apparatus for making the fiters is also disclosed in which spaced plugs 5 are wrapped in a continuous web of smoke-filter paper the edges of which are heat sealed to form a continuous tube 1. A wrapper 2 of plastics material is then extruded around the tube 1 through a cross-head die, optionally overwrapped with paper, and the continuous filter assembly is cut into quadruple filter lengths. The seals 7a, 7b are then produced by local hot pressing of the wrapper 2.
