Abstract
1336555 Shell-and-tube heat exchangers; steam generators UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 19 April 1971 [2 April 1970] 15792/70 Headings F4S and F4A In a shell-and-tube heat exchanger, barrier means comprising a plate 5 or plate segments through which the tubes 3 pass with a clearance 6, is provided adjacent a tube plate 1 into which the tube ends are sealed (e.g. welded) whereby in the event of a leak in one of the tubes, e.g. in the region of the joint 4, an errosive jet of the leaking fluid is prevented by the barrier means from impinging on an adjacent tube. The invention is intended for use in a steam generator in which hot sodium flows through U-tubes to heat and evaporate water flowing externally of the tubes and in such case additional barrier means may be provided therein at the bend portions of the tubes and may comprise a sleeve (11, Fig. 3) around each tube bend, or an open-ended cellular structure (13, Figs. 4, 5) with a tube bend extending through each cell. Other barrier means may be provided adjacent a tube supporting grid (7, Fig. 2) and comprises plates (8) having holes (9) therein which are a clearance fit around the tubes.
