Abstract

1336166 Channel induction furnaces ELECTRICITY COUNCIL 22 Dec 1971 [25 Sept 1970] 45921/70 Heading H5H [Also in Divisions F4 and C7] In a metallurgical channel induction furnace 4 an inert or reactive gas is introduced into one arm 12 of the channel 7 through a porous refractory plug 10. The porous plug is prepared by using a cestable refractory in a mould through which wires extend longitudinally to form the gas passages. The invention may be applied to the removal of H 2 , O 2 or N 2 from molten steel by an inert gas, the removal of H 2 from Al by a chlorine-containing gas, or the removal of impurities from Pb, Sn, Zn or steel by an oxidizing gas. The channel 7 may be disposed either in a vertical or an inclined plane.
