1335811 Belt gearing J S HEATON J J S HEATON J R S HEATON [trading as JOSEPH DEWHIRST & CO] 3 Nov 1970 [29 April 1970] 20552/70 Heading F2Q A method of making endless belts from flexible plastics strip 70 comprises coiling the strip into a helix of regular pitch, clamping all the convolutions of the helix at two positions by means of clamps 12, 14, severing the convolutions between the clamps 12, 14, displacing one set of cut ends a1, b1, c1, dl, Fig. 5B relatively to the other set of cut ends a2, b2, c2, d2 by the distance of one pitch of the helix, as in Fig. 5C, so that each pair of facing cut ends are on the same convolution of the strip, and uniting the ends of the strip then opposite each other. Each clamp 12, 14 comprises pivoted arms 28, 34 which may be clamped together by a pivoted lever 38. The clamps 12, 14 are pressed apart by springs 48 and the position of clamp 14 is determined by cams 66 acting through push rods 54. A handle 64, secured to the cams 66 by arms 62, is moved to rotate the cams 66. The ends of the strips are welded together by introducing a heated plate 74 between the cut ends, withdrawing the plate and pressing the two sets of cut ends together. Preferably the belt is made of polyurethane elastomer.
