Abstract

1335582 Combustion-suppressing atmospheres SUSQUEHANNA CORP 30 June 1971 [22 July 1970] 30569/71 Heading ASA An atmosphere in an enclosed compartment which supports mammalian lift but inhibits combustion of combustible materials of the non-self-sustaining type comprises (a) air; (b) a perfluoroalkane selected from CF 4 , C 2 F 6 and/or C 3 F 8 in an amount sufficient to give to the atmosphere a heat capacity per mole of total oxygen at least 40 cal/‹C at 25‹C; and (c) make up oxygen such that the total oxygen is sufficient to sustain mammalian life. The amount of (c) may be zero. Metered quantities of (b) and (c) are introduced as required into the enclosed air-containing compartment, e.g. an aircraft cabin, if a fire. risk exists.
