Abstract

1335557 Sterilizing particles GARDNERS OF GLOUCESTER Ltd 28 May 1971 [10 June 1970] 28010/70 Heading ASG Powders and like particulate solids are sterilized in a vertical chamber by means of a pulsating flow of sterilizing gas which is introduced near the bottom of the chamber and flings the material upwardly into the free space at the top of the chamber, allowing it to settle before the process is repeated. Preferably, the gas also gives a swirling motion to the particles. In the embodiment of Figs. 1 (not shown) and 3, powder is supplied from a silo (11) via a worm drive (12) and duplex preheaters (14 and 15) to the sterilizing chamber 16. An ethylene oxide/nitrogen (10/90) mixture from a preheater/humidifyer 32 is fed from a ring main 20 to radially directed bores (not shown) in short pulses controlled by a pneumatic timing control 62 actuating valve 23. Sterilized material is removed periodically to a hopper (24).
