1335477 Slitting webs CREBAN MFG CO Ltd 29 Sept 1972 [1 Oct 1971] 45710/71 Heading B4B An adjustment means for the displacement of the cutting edge of a rotary disc cutting blade in the axial direction of the blade according to the deviation of an intended line of cut longitudinally in a web of material, the adjustment means comprising a shoe 13a engageable with a channel-like formation 15a in the web and a mechanical coupling means 13d adapted to automatically effect a shift of the cutting edge of the blade corresponding to the displacement of the shoe in the channel 15a. The shoe 13a is connected to a link 13c which is mounted on one end of a flexible arm 13b, the other end of the arm being connected to a fixed part 14 of the cutting machine; the arm is adjustable in length by means of a collar (not shown). A claw member 13d is mounted on the shoe so that any movement thereof causes the blade to be moved correspondingly along a splined driving shaft 12. The edge of the shoe in contact with the material may be coated with P.T.F.E., the edge being maintained in such contact by a spring or magnetic means. In the event of the shoe riding out of the channel-like formation, i.e. over selvedges 15b, Fig. 3, the lifting movement of the shoe actuates a micro-switch via, e.g. a linkage, to stop the slitting machine. As shown a pair of identical cutting discs are mounted on a common splined shaft; alternatively, the discs could be rotated by individual motors mounted for pivotal movement such pivoting movement being controlled by claws in engagement with the blade. In a further modification, instead of the shoe being carried by the flexible arm 13b it may be suspended from a transverse element via pivoted joints to permit movement of the shoe.
