Abstract

1335097 Explosive compositions E I DUPONT DE NEMOURS & CO 16 Aug 1971 [18 Aug 1970] 38396/71 Heading C1D A water-in-oil explosive composition comprises a discontinuous aqueous phase containing an inorganic oxidizing salt, a continuous phase comprising a carbonaceous fuel having a negative oxygen balance, and an alkali metal or ammonium stearate as an emulsifier. Stearic acid may be included with the stearate. The inorganic salt may be a nitrate or perchlorate of ammonia, an alkali metal or an alkaline earth metal, e.g. a mixture of ammonium nitrate and sodium nitrate, the fuel may be fuel oil, diesel oil, tall oil, paraffin wax, benzene, oleic acid, nitropropane, or nitrobenzene, and the emulsifier sodium stearate. Sensitizers which may be added are TNT, PETN, RDX, HMX, 2,4,6- trinitro - N - methylaniline, nitrostarch, nitrocellulose, smokeless powder, nitrogen-base salts, and particulate Al or Mg. Air or gas bubbles may be incorporated by mechanical agitation, injecting air or nitrogen, adding hollow resin or glass particles, or generating gas from hydrogen peroxide, N,N<SP>1</SP>-dinitrosopentamethylene pentamine, or potassium borohydride. As additional fuels may be added finely-divided ferrosilicon, ferrophosphorus, carbon, sulphur, sugars, or vegetable meals. In one example a small quantity of hydrazine monohydrate is added. The compositions arepumpable and water resistant, and do not adhere to polyethylene storage bags.
