Abstract
1334371 Machine tool control CONSIGLIO NAZIONALE DELLE RICERCHE 5 Nov 1970 52697/70 Heading B3B [Also in Divisions G1 and G3] In a method of controlling a machine tool an electric signal is generated which is representative of the temperature of the region of contact between a cutting tool U and a workpiece P and the vibration of the cutting tool is also detected, and one of the cutting parameters of the machine tool is adjusted to reduce the vibrations when they exceed a predetermined value, and at least one other cutting parameter is adjusted in dependence upon the said electric signal to maintain the said temperature substantially constant at a predetermined value. Apparatus to carry out the said method includes a thermocouple formed by a junction between the cutting tool and the workpiece and including a mercury collector D having a fixed and a rotatable electrode. The said electric signal is produced by the thermoelectric e.m.f. of the thermocouple. The cutting parameters controlled are, the cutting speed which generates the said signal which is fed to a regulator 3 on which an optimum required temperature is set, and which operates through servomotor 4 and hydraulic actuator 5 to continuously control the speed of the machine tool spindle 6; the rate of cutter feed which, if excessive produces vibrations which are sensed by a transducer 7 and fed to a detecting apparatus 9, via an amplifier 8, to operate through a servomotor 10 and actuator 11 to control the cutter feed; the depth of cut by means of a servomotor 15 is actuated dependent on the electrical power consumption of the machine tool; and the overall power consumption of the machine tool is monitored by a wattmeter 12 having a pre-set optimum value and operating through an electric motor 13 and the hydraulic actuator 5 to vary the speed of the spindle 6. A timer device 14 registers the accumulated time a cutting tool U has been in use. For each tool an optimum temperature and useful life is ascertained for setting the parameters.
