Abstract

1334009 Lasers; discharge lamps GENERAL ELECTRIC CO Ltd 1 May 1972 [19 May 1971] 15861/71 Headings H1C and H1D A solid laser active medium is optically pumped by a discharge lamp which has a filter on its outer surface, this filter passing only wavelengths suitable for pumping the medium and reflecting other wavelengths back into the discharge lamp. This raises the efficiency of the discharge lamp at the pumping frequencies, and also provides radiation suitable for pumping while reducing heating and solarizing of the active medium. The discharge lamp and a rod of the active medium, e.g. a YAG, a glass or a ruby, are mounted along respective focal lines of an elliptical pumping light reflector; this latter may be a glass housing with an external silver coating. The lamp filter may comprise layers of zinc sulphide and thorium fluoride of a thickness which provides an interference filter. The outer layer of the filter is thorium fluoride, to allow water cooling of the lamp. The lamp may have a filling of krypton or xenon at a pressure of 400 torr.
