Abstract
1333506 Recirculating I.C. engine exhaust gases GENERAL MOTORS CORP 4 Nov 1971 [16 Nov 1970 17 Nov 1970] 51285/71 Heading F1B The flow of exhaust gas from an exhaust passage 40 to induction passages 44, 46 is controlled by a valve assembly 62 responsive to the vacuum at an elongated slot 132 in an induction passage 56 adjacent a throttle valve 136. The slot 132 extends from the upstream side to slightly beyond the downstream side of the throttle valve 136 in the closed position of the throttle valve and the resultant vacuum transmitted to the valve assembly 62 varies between first and second low values when the throttle valve is at its closed and fully open positions and a maximum value between these positions. At the first and second values of vacuum the valve member 86 closes the inlet 80 of a chamber 78 in a valve body 70 and at higher values of vacuum the diaphragm 122 moves against the bias of spring 124 to lift the valve member from the seat 84. The inlet 80 and outlet 82 of the chamber 78 communicate with passages 60 and 64 in a plate 42 between the carburetter 52 or air throttle valve body and the intake manifold 10. The passage 60 communicates with the passage 40 in the manifold 10, receiving a portion of the exhaust gases discharged from the engine combustion chambers, and the passage 64 communicates with the induction passages 44 and 46 in the plate 42 through passages 68. The valve body 70 carries the diaphragm 122 by means of a member 94 having a central portion 96 secured to the valve body with an interposed member 100 receiving an asbestos insulating disc 104 and graphited asbestos discs 110 providing a seal with the valve stem 88. The central portion 96 is connected to the rim 114 of the member 94 by three spokes 116 providing a minimized path for heat conduction to the rim 114 from the central portion 96.
