1333115 Feeding tobacco SERVICE D'EXPLOITATION INDUSTRIELLE DES TABACS ET DES ALLUMETTES 11 Dec 1970 [11 Dec 1969] 58846/70 Heading A2C In a device for forming a stream of material consisting of tangled shreds such as tobacco and having a substantially constant density of the type in which a reserve supply of material 13 having a substantially constant volume is formed by supplying the material 13 in the direction of the stream and discharging the material 13 in the same direction, the pressure a compressed gaseous fluid is exerted on the reserve supply of material 13 in the direction of the stream. The material 13 is fed over the bevelled terminal edge 11 of a vibrating plate 10, Fig. 4, to fall onto the top pair of pairs of rotating studded and vaned rollers 12 which forward it via another pair of rollers 12 into a rectangular vertical passageway (1) where it forms a reserve supply on top of a proportioning blade 16, Fig. 2. Air jets 15 from blowing devices 3, 4 serve to disperse the bank 14 of material 13 to level it off and keep it clear of a photoelectric level device 8, 9 that controls the material feed, and to produce an air pressure in the downwards direction - the rollers 12, in conjunction with the mass of material on them, serving to make the top portion of the passageway (1) relatively leaktight. The rotation of the studded and vaned rollers 12 also effects a compression of air. The air jets 15 are delivered alternately from the devices 3, 4. The blade 16 is actuable by a piston 17 to allow the material 13 to be compressed on a table 18 and to sever therefrom a dose of predetermined size. The vibrating plate 10 may be replaced by a conveyer belt in conjunction with either a set of distributing plates contained in concurrent planes, or by a vertical deflector plate disposed slantwise with respect to the rollers 12.
