Abstract

1333022 Sampling probe USS ENGS & CONSULTANTS Inc 9 Feb 1972 [12 Feb 1971] 6099/72 Heading C7D [Also in Division F4] Apparatus for manipulating an examination probe to be immersed in and withdrawn from a bath of molten metal comprises a cooled jacket 24 surrounding the probe 32, means for moving the probe in and out of the jacket 24, and means for moving the jacket 24 between a position away from the bath, and a position near the bath 12 so that the probe 32 may be moved out of the jacket and immersed in the bath. The jacket and probe are secured to a carriage 20 moving on a vertical runway 16 which is mounted on an arm pivoted to a fixed output, or moving away from and towards the bath on a track. The probe 32 is moved out of and into the jacket 24 by a double acting air cylinder 38 and a rod 34, Fig.2. A thermocouple 60 and sampler 58 are mounted on the end of the probe 32. A cardboard sleeve 62 surrounds the sampler and thermocouple. The end of the sleeve 24 may be closed by a wooden plug, or by a cap to prevent entry of slag before the probe is extended, or an inert gas may be introduced between the probe and the jacket. Since the sampler maybe retracted within the cooled jacket immediately, a liquidus arrest temperature is readily available.
