Abstract

1332205 Cathode-ray tube displays HEWLETT-PACKARD CO 26 April 1971 [11 May 1970] 11406/71 Heading H4T In an arrangement for tracing characters on a CRT in response to a sequence of digital instructions, each instruction specifies a straight-line vector by its end points (Xa, Ya, Xb, Yb) and in addition includes further digital data specifying the time to be taken over the trace so that the tracing velocity may be kept constant. As shown each character word is loaded in succession into 13 under control of a "ready" signal from 33 (which also over 55 advances the screen X position along the line, or shifts to the next line of characters over 55 and 57), and this addresses the first stroke in a read-only memory 19, thus reading out the X and Y start coordinates to 29, 30. The address in 19 is then incremented and the next X, Y co-ordinates read into 31, 32 (33 continues to order the alternate loading into these pairs of registers). At the same time a Z part of the stroke word is passed to 43, and this contains "length of stroke" data which is decoded and passed to 41 where it produces a ramp voltage of period corresponding to the length of stroke. This ramp voltage controls the speed of switching of the input of D-A converters 21, 27 (comprising current sources and a weighted resistor network) from registers 29, 30 to 31, 32. The outputs of the D-A converters are combined respectively with the character position outputs of 59 and 61, and passed to the CRT. The Z data also controls the unblanking of the tube beam, and provides an end-of-character signal at the last stroke to order the loading of the next character.
