Abstract

1332152 Mine roof supports W E & F DOBSON Ltd 19 Jan 1971 [24 Jan 1970] 3530/70 Heading F1D (Also in Division F2] A pressure relief valve mechanism comprises a main relief valve 29 which communicates through a bleed passage 47 with a space 45 to be relieved, so that this valve opens only on a gradual rise of pressure above a predetermined value. The mechanism also comprises a secondary relief valve 30 which is normally biased to the closed position whilst being exposed to the pressures on opposite sides of the bleed passage 47, and which opens only in response to a sudden pressure increase in the space 45. Hydraulic Pit Props The mechanism is embodied in a telescopic pit prop in combination with other valves and devices. The setting of the main valve is adjustable by a nut 68. The bleed passage 47 is formed in the secondary valve member 42 which co-operates with a seat 41 and has an enlarged hollow piston loaded by spring 53. A release ball valve carried by the secondary valve is . manually operable by a plunger 60. The prop is extended and filled initially with hydraulic fluid by a filling gun which engages and operates a filling valve (86) Fig.6 (not shown) in a bore 70 which communicates through a filter 75 with a check valve 81 in communication with a space 37. This space is connected through a cylinder port (11a) Fig.1 (not shown) with the interior of the prop. A visual indication of pressure within the prop is afforded by a pressure responsive sleeve 96 which slides on a fixed ported stem 93 communicating with space 45. Normal pressure is indicated by a position of the closed end of the sleeve flush with the end of the housing 94. The indicator is surrounded by a protective shield 105.
