Abstract

Stencils and stencilling. - Stencils, masks, letters, ornaments, &c. are held on regular or irregular surfaces by magnetic attraction during the application of colour in liquid or powder form by brushes, sprayers, or spatulµ. The attracting surface consists of the square, hexagonal, or other shaped poles of a series of electro-magnets, which are arranged below flat-work or inside hollow-ware to be stencilled. The stencils may be cut from sheets of nickel, iron, or steel, or from sheets of non-magnetic material coated with magnetic iron oxide, or to which are subsequently attached pieces of magnetic material. The stencils may also be made of non-magnetic metal such as tinfoil on to which a layer of nickel or iron has been electrolytically deposited.
