Abstract

1330944 Treatment of thread OMNIUM DE PROSPECTIVE INDUSTRIELLE 19 April 1971 [21 Jan 1970] 20009/71 Heading D1F [Also in Division F4] A process of removing treatment fluid from a thread comprises passing the thread through a convergent-divergent nozzle, simultaneously passing a gas inert to the thread through the nozzle to produce a supersonic flow of gas in the region of that end of the nozzle which is downstream with respect to the direction of flow of the gas, a zone of low gas pressure being thereby created in the supersonic flow, and passing the thread through the zone. The thread may be passed through two such nozzles, the second (in the direction of displacement of the thread) of said nozzles being permanently fed with air at a pressure higher than the critical pressure at the constriction of the nozzle, whilst the first nozzle is fed with air at a pressure which is alternately lower then higher than the critical pressure at the constriction of the first nozzle. By this means successive treated and non-treated zones appear. The above process may be carried out in the apparatus shown in Fig. 1. In this apparatus thread A passes through treatment chambers 1-6. In chamber 1; an acid treatment (the acid being supplied from tank 10) is carried out, the thread passing through apertures 1b and 1c. Recovery chambers 7 and 8 ensure the recovery of any leakage liquid to tank 10. The chambers 2, 4 and 6 correspond to drying zones. Chambers 8, 14, 15, 16, 17 and 22 act as recovery chambers returning treatment liquids to tanks 18, 19, neutralising tank 12 and washing tank 20. The inlet and outlet apertures of the chambers 2, 4 and 6 are each in the shape of convergent-divergent nozzles, e.g. for chamber 2 referenced 2b and 2c. After the various drying steps the thread may be finally treated in a heater 24. Means are provided to control the pressure valves in the nozzles and chambers. These means may be in the form of a binary trigger circuit, a sonic or supersonic generator or a vibrating reed whistle (Figs. 4-6, not shown).
