1330714 Fire and intruder alarms R A L MOSS 25 Nov 1971 [17 Dec 1970] 60096/70 Heading G4N An intruder or fire alarm comprises a unit capable of being suspended or supported away from the walls, ceiling and floor of a room and having means to generate sound or ultrasonic waves and to radiate the waves in at least a plurality of directions so that the space around the unit is filled with the waves and comprising omnidirectional means to receive reflected waves and to operate an alarm in response to variations in the received reflected waves. The unit may take the form of a spherical casing having holes through which transducers can radiate an ultrasonic wave at 40 kHz and having six receiving transducers equally displayed by 90 degrees, the receiver may include an amplifier tuned to the transmitter frequency, feeding a detector and a low frequency amplifier tuned to amplify signals produced due to movement of an intruder, a trigger circuit which changes state when the output from the low frequency amplifier exceeds a reference level and a normallyenergized alarm-operating relay. Alternatively, the vibrations may be transmitted and received by common transducers or by action of the spherical shell itself.
