Abstract

1330658 Submerged combustion apparatus, liquid heater GAZ DE FRANCE 26 Nov 1970 [28 Nov 1969] 56293/70 Headings F4A and F4K In a submerged combustion apparatus operating at a pressure above atmospheric pressure and comprising a burner 1 immersed in a water-filled primary bath 2, combustion products leaving the bath through a pipe 4 enter a heat recuperator-condenser 5, including a secondary bath 18, from whence non-condensible products are ejected through a valve 6. Fluid to be heated, e.g. water, is first passed through a first heat exchanger 8 immersed in the secondary bath 18 and thereafter, via a line 9, to a second heat exchanger 10 immersed in the primary bath 2. Heated fluid, which may be in the form of hot water or steam, leaves at 11. Harmful products of combustion such as SO 2 and CO 2 , which are dissolved in the primary bath 2, can be continuously recovered in a closed recuperator circuit 12, 13. Part of the condensed water in the bath 18 can be returned to the main bath 2 through a line 15 and pump 14. Devices 16 and 17 enable the water levels in the baths to be kept constant. An alternative embodiment (Fig. 3, not shown) utilizes a depending vertical submerged burner having a cylindrical combustion chamber (12<SP>1</SP>) provided with an internal heat exchanger (16<SP>1</SP>) connected to the heat exchanger (19<SP>1</SP>) disposed in the main bath (13<SP>1</SP>); the fuel mixture is at least partly burned before the submerged combustion. An expansion turbine may be disposed in the combustion products exhaust circuit, its energy being used to compress combustion agent and/or fuel gas fed to the burner. A plurality of serially disposed condenser-heat recuperators can be utilized.
