Abstract

1330299 Gas turbine engine combustion equipment ESSO RESEARCH V ENG CO 11 Dec 1970 [19 Dec 1969 29 July 1970] 61916/69 and 36707/70 Heading F1L [Also in Divisions F4 and G1] A method of reducing smoke and other carbonaceous material in a combustion flame, and thus reducing the quantity of excess air needed for combustion in a gas-turbine engine, comprises fixedly disposing at least principally in the primary reaction zone of the flame a solid catalyst material which acts to reduce smoke and which is substantially involatile at the temperature of the primary reaction zone. The catalytic material is preferably barium, magnesium, iron, tin, aluminium, vanadium, manganese, sodium, calcium zirconium, platinum, yttrium, lanthanum, erbium, gallium, titanium, chromium, cobalt, nickel, palladium, a rare earth metal, an oxide, of any of these metals, or a compound of these metals which decomposes to an oxide when heated. The material may be formed as a synergistic mixture selected from one of the following combinations of two compounds; aluminium with either sodium, yttrium, lanthanum, erbium or platinum, gallium with sodium, zirconium with either yttrium, erbium, chromium, manganese, iron or platinum, manganese with either sodium, yttrium, titanium, chromium, iron or nickel, banuin with either sodium, yttrium, erbium or zirconium, and palladium with iron. The catalyst may be provided in the form of a grid of wires, a flat spiral or a cylindrical coil constituted by the catalytic material itself or the material coated on a refractory base, or an asbestos sheet may be impregnated with a catalytically active material and then dried.
