Abstract

1330160 Electro-physical measurement particle analysis GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 31 Dec 1970 [20 Feb 1970] 62081/70 Heading G1N In apparatus for analyzing particles especially colloids in a liquid suspension they are ELECTROPHORETICALLY DRIVEN through a constriction and the resulting impedance changes and time-of passage through the constriction is used to determine the number, size and mobility of the particles. The application may be to sizing and counting blood cells. As described a container is provided with a removable partition of ceramic, plastic or glass, having an aperture covered by a membrane having a pore therein of e.g. 1..50 microns diameter. MEMBRANE CONSTRUCTION preferably a sheet of polycarbonate less than 20 microns thick is subjected to particle radiation to cause fission tracking and then etched e.g. in NaOH. A small segment having the required sized hole is chosen and using a steromicroscope any other pores are coated with epoxy cement and layers stripped off the membrane to produce the required thickness. The preferred pore-size-ratio is an L/D of 5:1 Alternative materials are glass, mica polyester resins, or cellulostic, or a pair of membranes may be used separated by a microporous material (agar, cellulose nitrate etc) to reduce electroosmatic effects, Fig.4 (not shown). The particles are added to the electrolyte which may be NaCl; KCl, HCl, NaOH, with a surfactant to reduce agglomeration and clogging of the pore. This may be unlocked by ultrasonic agitation. The signals may be monitored by a C.R.T, peak voltmeter, or counter.
