Abstract

1329972 Collecting filamentary tows IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 28 Sept 1970 [6 Oct 1969] 48891/69 Heading B5B [Also in Division D1] Apparatus for collecting a tow 2 of continuous filaments comprises a collecting can 1 mounted for rotation on a turntable (not shown), a tow supply shoot 3 and a ram 5 mounted above the can 1 and pneumatic means (not shown) for raising and lowering the ram to tamp the delivered tow. The ram 5 may be raised and lowered by a distance dependent on the resistance to compaction of the tow already in the can or it may be operated with a fixed stroke. The position of shoot 3 may be changed intermittently to spread the build up of tow 4 over the full width of the can. The head 6 of ram 5 is preferably made of highly polished stainless steel and has one side curved to conform to the curvature of the can. Examples relate to the collection of polyhexamethylene adipamide tows.
