1329414 Chairs BENDIT (PLASTICS) Ltd 4 Jan 1971 [5 Jan 1970] 514/70 Headings A4H A4J An article of furniture (a chair as described) comprises a frame 10, a shell 20 formed of a flat thermoplastic sheet blank shaped to bend into a desired three-dimensional form and having portions arranged to come into register in the final form, and means connecting the shell to the frame and at the same time securing the registration portions in position to maintain the shell in the desired form. In the embodiment shown, the blank is shaped as shown in Fig.4, the cut-outs 23, 24 providing a preferred direction of bending and providing parts 26, 27 which overlap in the final position and are secured by connectors 40 passed through holes 29-31. The connectors 40 also pass through a back member 16 of the frame, which is formed of metal tubular members 15, 16 detachably engaging diametral bores in heads 11, 12 of rear legs 13. The shell may have arm portions formed integral with it, or separate arms formed of similar material may be provided; such arms may be fixed to the chair by the connectors 40. The material used for the shell may be bendable at room temperature, in which case it can be flattened for storage when removed from the frame, or it may require to be softened before bending. Upholstery, preferably in the form of detachable pads, may be provided. A plurality of chair shells may be attached to a single elongated frame.
