Abstract
1329370 Retractive switches; hand actuating devices for switches INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 26 Oct 1971 [4 Jan 1971] 49620/71 Heading H1N An actuating device for electric switches comprises a unitary body including a base 3 and actuating assembly 5 having an elongated actuating member 13 and means responsive to pressure applied at one end 23 to translate said member relative to the base 3 along a defined path from its normal position (shown) to an actuating position (Fig. 2b, not shown) and to restore it on removal of the pressure, said means comprising either two cantilevers 15, 17 coupled to the member 13 by integral hinge members 19, 21 (Fig. la) or a resilient cylinder 47 slotted at 49 with a circular conical diaphragm (51, Fig. 1c, not shown) connecting its base to the member 13, the hinge members 19, 21 or conical diaphragm (51) forming an acute angle with the cantilevers 15, 17 or side walls of cylinder 47, respectively. The length of hinges 19, 21 or radius of the conical diaphragm is greater than the operative travel of the member 13 to ensure retraction. The unitary body is preferably of thermoplastic material such as polypropylene, nylon, polyethylene, polyphenylene oxide or mouldable polyurethane, and may contain a filler such as antimony oxide. A separate keytop 1 has a portion 11 for engaging the end 23 of member 13 and has a hollow cavity (45, Fig. 2c, not shown) which produces an acoustic snap when brought into sharp contact with base 3. The actuating device is used to distend (for example) an elastic diaphragm switch having deformable conductive layers (25 and 29, Fig. 2a, not shown).
